About the role

 

Plays a key role in the development of new scientific innovations within the Kerry RD&A team.  Works as a senior member of a research unit /project team or may direct a team on a smaller project or part of a large /complex research project.  Supports research and product development efforts with sensory analyses, analytical tests, applications and insights. Could provide second level supervision to RD&A science team, providing technical leadership and mentoring to junior members.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Is responsible for developing methods for analysis, illustrating product attributes, and performing sensory panels. Applies science for experimental design.
  • Conducts basic research for the improvement of existing products and the development of new products, outlining procedures and specifications. Oversees testing and application screening to support new solutions and sales.
  • Understands key commercial requirements of ingredient industry ensuring applications are acceptable in the regional or global markets where sales are expected, including any special criteria such as organic, allergen and GM and keeping up to date on best practice requirements.
  • Is responsible for the use of analytical capability and techniques to underpin research and development projects and understands key operations issues.
  • Responsible for product development from initiation to launch, including applications when needed. Confers with process engineers, flavor experts, sales staff, suppliers, customers, food safety, regulations and packaging and marketing specialists to resolve problems.
  • Develops food system formulations and related applications stability performance through demonstrated understanding of food formulation and chemical interactions.
  • Develops methods for analysis. Provides analytical support to manufacturing and analytical support to innovations.
  • Oversees sensory testing and application screening to support new solutions and sales.
  • Interacts and troubleshoots with customers on application concerns. Fosters relationships with peers at key accounts, building the image of the company as a leader in its field. Develops application knowledge within assigned food categories and becomes recognized as a solutions partner by food product developers. Assists customers with technical issues that may arise.
  • Participates in designated RD&A projects. Ensures appropriate documentation of experimental trials and outcomes to facilitate scale up and product transfer to manufacturing.
  • Builds further scientific knowledge through interactions with RDA managers and directors and/or academic experts, literature reviews, regulatory monitoring, and application studies.
  • Actively participates and drives quality improvement for the function.
  • Develop products aligned with the design in terms of quality and food safety.
  • Fosters and grows links with external research institutions to grow the technology.         
  • Supports RD&A with product development insights, analytical and application expertise.       
  • Takes on a key role in the management of strategic research projects.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   
  • Leverages relationships to identify potential new hires and/or resources that may be   valuable to the company.

Qualifications and skills

 

  • At least 4 years in food industry (meat applications)
  • Bacholer degree in Food or Chemical Engineering or similar
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills through different levels in the organization, with ability to present technical findings.
  • Ability to develop and implement projects.
  • Work well in an ambiguous setting, self-motivated, proactive, work with minimal direction.
  • Work well with cross-functional teams.
  • Team player, report results in a conscience manner, stay abreast of current literature.
  • Problem solver, solution seeker, independently identify experimental work necessary to achieve project objectives, contribute workable creative ideas.
  • Interact with other groups within Kerry when necessary (applications groups/marketing/production).
  • Language: intermediate English at least.
